Straw is THE summer neutral. It is easy to fall in love with it’s flexibility with any outfit as well as its signature texture. I love my boater hat, which I picked up in favorite store in Barcelona. However, while its black detail makes it unique, I wanted to update the look to something I found a little more personal. Using a scrap of gingham, I made a little touch that tied my outfit together. I really like this DIY because 1. it’s easy & 2. it can be removed or exchanged to add a color pop to any outfit.
Shirt Old Navy / Shoes Sperry / Shorts J. Crew Factory (similar) / Bike Schwinn / Basket Chappy Happy
Materials
A scrap of fabric ~ 4 inches wide x 28 inches long
Sewing machine
Instructions
- Trim your scrap gingham to create a rectangle ~4 inches wide x 28 inches long (or longer depending on the size of the bow – you can test this by loosely tying the scrap around the hat & practicing your bow).
- Press the right sides of the fabric together & pin along the length. Sew with ~ 1/2 inch seam allowance.
- Turn right side out.
- Tuck extra fabric from ends back into the tube & sew shut

I love the bow you have on your straw hat! I bought one recently but it had a little flower clipped on the side. Definitely want to swap it out for a cute bow. Thanks for sharing your tutorial! 🙂
