As a professional and a blogger your smile should be your staple accessory. It should be the first thing you put on in the morning, but seldom is. Why is that? Well, for one – I don’t know a single person who loves the sound of your alarm (unless you’re Leslie Knope). No one smiles at the sound of an artificial bird, and even afterwards while dressing for a long work day. In fact, fatigued from a semi-restful sleep it may be hours before I put on a smile. Another reason could be the physical aspect – as you get older you get an affinity for coffee. It sneaks up on you, one day you’re a college freshman scoffing at black coffee, and the next you’re first in line Starbucks before stats class to enjoy your second cup of the day. So – post the slight rambling – we can agree that there are two components of a healthy smile, one is emotional and one is physical.
How can we make your smile the first thing you put on in the morning?
First, let’s address the physical side of a beautiful smile happiness. The best way for a better mood in the morning is hearing the alarm and feeling rested. This begins with — ( you guessed it)
Getting to Bed Earl-(ier)
This one has always been a struggle for me. As my days become busier – managing a full-time job & a blog, it seems that there is never enough time in the day. I end up staying up late with the glow of a screen nearby. When I get enough sleep (rare), I feel refreshed and am less likely to divulge in unhealthy activities. For example, I have more energy and am more likely to go to the gym and less likely to eat bad food to keep myself awake. I’ve had to make a conscious effort to get enough sleep. Reminding myself that it’s late and listening to my body when I’m tired. However, in order to get enough I often head to bed very early – like senior center early. Part of the reason is because it takes a long time for me to fall asleep, as I am prone to poor bedtime routines. To be clear – I don’t mean washing your face and brushing your teeth. I mean nasty habits that prolong your wakefulness and procrastinate on your beauty hours. Stopping these habits starts with recognizing them. So what are they & how can we make a healthier routine?
Making a Healthier Bedtime Routine
The body needs to relax before sleeping. The brain needs to feel ready, this can start by staying away from bad stimulation. For example, ( a huge one ) is staying off your phone. Many studies say the blue light from your device’s screen is ultra stimulating to your almost resting brain; putting off sleep. One thing I’m trying to do more of is picking up a book and read for 15 minutes before bed. This simple task also helps wind down all the racing thoughts I have during the day, concentrating on a simple task that I find enjoyable and save special for bedtime.
So the physical side – now that we have enough sleep we can stay away from coffee and caffeine right? LOL – right. There are many products to reverse the effects of night long study sessions and work time vices, but my favorite has been with Smile Brilliant.
Smiling More with Smile Brilliant
I liked this product because it gave me professional results at home by utilizing personalized teeth whitening trays. Using the easy to follow instructions included in the kit, you make a mold to send back to the company, much like the mouth guards you made easily for sports in high school (nostalgia optional). Two-Three weeks later you receive trays that are personalized to your teeth. Apply the whitening gel to your new trays and voila! After just one treatment I saw my coffee stains disappearing.
My teeth did get really sensitive, as they do with all types of whitening treatments I’ve tried. However, the guys over at Smile Brilliant include de-sensitizing gel which I applied just before bed. This helped, but the whitening gel is really potent, which is one reason they advise you to apply a very minimal amount during use. I would use the de-sensitizing gel given in the kit along with reduced application time (only 30-45 minutes) when using the actual whitener.
So how are my coffee stains? Still present, but reduced. After all, I didn’t kick that nasty habit. However, the great thing about purchasing these trays is that they last. You can use them multiple times and just re-order the affordable whitener gel whenever you’re feeling a little dull. Besides having sensitive teeth I had a really great experience with this product.
